I have changed boats this season and now havea Mirage 2700 which is fitted with a Volvo 2002. When starting from cold it takes anything up to 30seconds to start. The engine appears to be turning over very slowly. Ive ruled out problems with the batteries and the condition of the starting motor has been checked and found to be ok. From warm it is no problem and once started runs very well. Two new injectors were fitted in 2000 and a new fuel lift pump last year.

Any ideas would be appreciated

Is it... Only a problem when starting from cold?

Do you know the cold start procedure for this range of VP engines.. You need to select some throttle in neutral and then pull out & push back the stop control lever. The reason for this, this process in that order, moves the fuel rack along to ineffect over fuel the engine for a 'cold start'. When the engine fires close the throttle back to norm posistion, at this point moving the throttle moves the fuel rack back to its norm postion.

Maybe? This may help.

The starter motor may run fine when removed from the engine but if the bearings are rusty it will take a lot of power out of the starter motor.
Check also the battery connections and the battery isolating switch. resistance here cuts down the voltage to the motor significantly.
On these engines there is also a cold start proceedure of pulling out the stop and releasing it before turning the engine over.

Hi there,

I had exactly the same problem until I "found" the cold start procedure on the Internet.

In Neutral, move the throttle to somewhere between half to two-thirds.
Pull out the stop
Push in the stop
Press start.

Works every time, first time. Drop the revs down once she starts to race.

I am just catching up having been away for a while.

I also had starting problems with my 2002. I also read the starting procs in the PBO and used them. There was some improvement but not totally. I then read that there had been starter motor changes made during its manufacturing period due to inefficiency.
I took my starter motor to specialist where I live and had it stipped down. It was worn and breaking up.
The specialist basically rebuilt it, carried out modifications which were recommended within the trade ( I believe its a Bosch?)
When I refitted the unit the difference was amazing. The speed of turn over appeared to be twice as fast and now I do not have any trouble starting at all.
It cost me £200 for this work which has been well worth it.

Regards.

Peter.
