Can anyone shed any light please why my Volvo 2001's engine alarm sounds at highish revs?

Goes along fine at what I call "cruising revs" but try to push it a bit and the alarm sounds after 5-10mins. Alarm stops sounding 5-10secs after easing back the revs.

Any comments/ advice appreciated.

Agree with Russell - overheating.

It will probably be from scaling in the water distribution pipe, a fairly common problem. It is a brass pipe passing through the cylinder head from front to back. It connects the raw water entry at the front to the connection at the back which leads to the exhaust elbow. If you take off both connections you can then drive out the water distribution pipe with a suitable drift working from the front of the engine. Take note of the orientation of the holes in the side of the pipe as it is removed.

You will need to clean it and possibly open up the side holes (which are the ones that pass cooling water into the head) or, if you prefer, buy a new pipe - part number for a 2001: 840842-9.

Hi

Had the same problem with mine only it would take about an hour to go off. Checked the afore mentioned pipe and it is as clean as a whistle. No clag in the cooling pipes as this was checked when the head was off.

I think I have cured it by discovering that there is a hole in the bottom of my saildrive leg that was clogged up with crap. I also intend to replace the shim inside the water pump as this is part worn.

Also you can remove the sensor from the side of the engine, dangle it in a pan of water on a stove. Heat it up with a thermometer in the pan and have a circuit tester on the sensor. This will test the sensor letting you know if that is the source of the problem.
