I've just received this e-mail from Keep Wales Tidy (I'm part of a volunteer group in Penarth Marina). They urgently need people to help on Friday Sept.24th (this week) to clean-up the mouth of the Ogmore river. If you can help, or know anyone who might be interested in doing their bit for the environment...
"In support of the nationwide ‘Tidy Wales Week’, volunteers from various agencies ventured to mouth of the River Ogmore to remove hundreds of discarded tyres; but the organisers, Keep Wales Tidy were disappointed at the local support for the clean-up.
Staff from Bridgend and the Vale of Glamorgan County Borough Councils, Environment Agency Wales and Keep Wales Tidy joined volunteers from Cardiff Rivers Group today to don waders and haul out the tyres from the River near Ogmore-by-Sea.
The 15 participants worked tremendously hard and removed a staggering 200 tyres, but were dismayed to find that they only scratched the surface but with local support they hope to complete the clean up on Friday.
Brian Jones, KWT officer for Bridgend said, “Although we made a great start today, it was slightly disappointing that only a handful of local volunteers lent a hand. I would guess that there are over 1000 tyres in this stretch of river, so we need an army of volunteers in waders and wetsuits if we are going to be able to make a real difference.”
“As it is Tidy Wales Week, we have decided to return this Friday to have another go. Keep Wales Tidy is making a plea to volunteers in the local area to come along and help us on Friday if they possibly can. This is a beautiful part of Wales which is enjoyed by many.....please help us restore it to its natural beauty”, he added,
Keep Wales Tidy’s Projects Director, Louise Tambini said, “Earlier this month Keep Wales Tidy held ‘The Great Taff Tidy’ and the response from local people was fantastic, with over 600 volunteers getting involved. I hope that people who enjoy walking, cycling, fishing, horseriding or canoeing in the Ogmore catchment show the same love for their river and come and lend a hand on Friday”.
Volunteers are asked to meet on Friday 24th September at Portobello House off Ogmore Road at 10am. Please wear suitable clothing and wellies.
Keep Wales Tidy will provide insurance cover and equipment for volunteers. Volunteers are needed to go onto the river to remove tyres, to litter-pick the banks and help carry tyres back to the collection points.
Anyone with a wetsuit, raft, grappling hook, shovel or waders will be especially welcome!
