Not sure I would want to be towed that fast! Mind you being over 7 ton of wood and sundry metal, I couldn't. But unless there was a 'help I'm sinking' issue I would have thought that that was a bit daft. Mind you I am getting old!

Agreed. Way too fast unless there was some pressing reason.

The reason

Rather shamefully I can explain all. Having taken Seabee up the Alde on Friday with a glorious sail almost the entire way up from SYH, I had an enjoyable evening at a mooring. SWMBO and a friend then joined me on Sat am for the return trip. Unfortunately whilst trying to escape the gap at Shingle Street I found that the latest sketch map is already slightly out of date and that the bank has indeed grown and moved further into the channel - the result was a high grounding! Having tried a kedge and lots of revs to no avail, and with a rapidly ebbing tide I called a Pan. Thankfully some very kind offers of support were afforded by a couple on a Najad, but they drew too much to be able to get close enough to pass a line. The Volunteer was able to be with us within 20 mins. In the interim, the gentleman in the vessel in the picture above came up to us to take a line across to the larger vessel, but in doing so also went aground at rather a pace - which took away his forestay and thus his rig.

Volunteer was unable to drag me off but Mr Pinney from the Butley Oysterage and his rather larger fishing vessel Jolene, made pretty short work of it, allowing Volunteer to aid the chap above.

John and his team were awesome (again shamefully, he is a mate of my Dad's and thus I fear it is going to cost me much over the coming months!) Thankfully I suffered nothing more than some damage to the gelcoat and some bruising from SWMBO.

I should reiterate that John and his team are volunteers and depend on donations for their work. They are out in all weathers and all year. I can only offer my sincere thanks to everyone involved (and obviously a larger donation to John as well!)

Now I have to try and win back SWMBO confidence to get her out on the water again - any ideas gratefully received!
