I am thinking of signing up to one of their packs using the prepaid scheme:-

I am resident in France, have no mobile dongle and my Spanish is not great.
However, when I am away from home and need the mobile internet, I am on my boat in Spain (mostly).

So is this a good scheme for the odd days or weeks mobile internet in Spain from time to time? What are the charges for using this on the odd occasion in France?

Can I order this via the internet and get it set up in France?

Is there a coverage map somewhere?

You'll be charged roaming rates whilst outside Spanish cells - not as bad from 1st July as previously, since the EC legislation came into force - but could be x3 the charge in Spain.

You won't be able to order a SIM on the internet - you have to obtain it in person with proof of identity and, possibly, proof of domicile - international rules to prevent terrorists obtaining SIM cards which hinder them marginally and prove a major hassle for most law-abiding citizens.

Bonne chance!

I have Spanish Vodafone dongle which I purchased in Gran Canaria last Feb (prepaid E39 for dongle + 2 weeks unlimited use). When I arrived in La Coruna I found a Voda shop & got it charged 1gb for 90 days use (E60) but ran out after about 1 month. So then I prepaid E50 for 30days unlimited use. Has worked OK in all the Rias I have visited, now in Ria Arousa. You do need to attend the Vodafone agent in person with your passport & your SIM details when you have them. Suggest you try to get a list of Vodafone shops.

Once you have your dongle, you can recharge them in Spain in most tabacs and a fair number of news kiosks: no need to search out a Vodafone shop. Just have a note of the sim number, charge it up by the right ammount of cash and then send a text to the number using the right format; Vodafone shops will give you the right number and form of words to text. makes things much easier. We used to use the €50 unlimited per month when we were there, as Skype used a lot of data.

We are also not in Spain all the time so we use Vodafone pay-as-you go and it works well, not as fast as broadband but a lot better than the marina wi-fi and cheaper. I top up the card with $20.00 which has always lasted me a couple of weeks of quite heavy use however it is important to send the required message as the €20.00 only lasts a couple of days if you dont. You send "C BAS" to 2201 for the €20 to be converted to data use and watch out because the leaflet supplied by the Vodafone shop over there gave the wrong number and you only get one chance to convert it!

Is there any way of signing up to the Vodafone service without being in Spain?

It almost looks like you can do it online - but you need to select a Spanish province for the address!

But this looks like it requires a monthly contract.
I don't want one of those as the use is just occasional (i.e. when on the boat in Spain).
No, its pay as you go - well at least the Masmovil sim I have got is.

Looking at the tariffs, the Prepaid 5 has no minimum charge per month and data is 5.9cts per mb.

Really an emergency data link - €590/Gb seems unbelievably expensive especially when the going rate is about €6/Gb.
If one can wait until 2014 the EC will have rationalised roaming data to about €2/500Mb. Meanwhile the cellular providers are busy ripping-off the polloi.
