It is also rummered that if used abroad you can use your UK sim. Anyone tried this? I have one in the for sale section but would like to know if it can be used abroad

I think the product you are looking at is a repeater, this acts as a 3G Cell locally and transmits the mobilephone over the internet. I have used similar products (from orange) at customers where they are in a 'black spot' to enable their phines to be used.

They dont need a fixed IP address so I see no reason why, assuming you have a good wifi connection running at more than 1mb why this would not work from any location.

The only potential issue would be if vodafone check to see if your internet connection IP address is in the UK and only allow the connection if that is the case. You could use a VPN to get around this

The Vodafone Gateway does not work overseas as apparently, according to the Vodafone Forum, you have to register it and tie it to a British Land-Line telephone number.

See my replies in the "For Sale" section:

Although if you have a UK address it is registered to with appropriate broadband connection you could set up a VPN for it to connect too. You need quite a bit of kit and good understanding of networks to achieve this though - and probably not cost effective!!

Last summer Vodafone ran a promotion which did cover most (not all) european countries, allowing roaming calls at UK rates. Extremely useful for us at the time! If they do this again, it would be as you describe, but at the time of writing no-one there is prepared to say whether they will or not.

True. The promotion saved you 75p per call you are charged under 'Vodafone Passport'. Not insignificant but not bank breaking provided you are in one of the 'passport' countries. Unfortunately Turkey is not a passport country and roaming costs a bomb from there but Greece was fine.

We use local sim cards when we can in Greece and Turkey but use our UK vodafone sim when calling the UK from a 'passport' country.

Cheers,

Bob

calling overseas on a uk mobile is a joke. For 20 euros pm I get 1000 free mins in home country, 3 Gig data and 400 free mins to any phone anywhere in the EU, fixed or mobile. But of course calling from another country is a different matter...
Maybe the EU commission will do something about this.
