Hi all
Can anyone help me in choosing a new outboard engine for my Vivacity 650.

I was wondering if a 6hp engine would be enough.
Also, do I need a long-shaft engine?

6 Hp will have sufficient power, although someone will come along and say for ample you will need more.

The trade of becomes the weight issue of bigger engines, unless you can get reliable old 2 stroke...

Long shaft probably better depends on the engine mounting arrangement..

Other question is engine charging for battery, for me it was never worth it...

6 Hp should fine on a Vivacity 650. Best though if you can get the "sail " version which will have a more suitable prop than the standard one. I guess the mounting arrangement on the 650 will be suitable for a standard (15" shaft) model but check the height of the mounting above the water line. If its significantly more than 15" you will need a longshaft.

The sail version of an outboard will probably be a longshaft anyway which is good because it puts the prop deeper.

The sail version will probably also have battery charging but thats not something to go out of your way for. A solar panel is probably better
 
Yes 6 HP should be fine. I have a 6HP on a 6.5 metre trailer sailer and it certainly is adequate. In fact I would go for smaller for my needs if I could find a smaller engine that is much lighter. My style of sailing means I virtually never use the engine and it stays inside under the cockpit. Hence weight is important when I want to use it.
Long shaft is certainly better on a sail boat. However you will want an adjustable bracket so that you can raise it for when you have a lot of people in the cockpit and for servicing/starting. You need to be able to lower the engine deeper in the water if you are in rough water or have a person on the bow (so lifting the stern).
One last factor is that a small o/b might be single cylinder hence a lot more noise and vibration while a twin runs a lot smoother and quieter. good luck olewill
