Interesting comparison - at least I think so.

Last week we were in Poole Yarmouth and Cowes.

Poole Quay BH - 36ft total cost incl Elec, Harbour and VAT £46.12
East Cowes - same facilitiy (actually better facilities IMHO) £30.17
Yarmouth - Walkashore (incl elec, VAT and 4 showers at 1.30 each) £33.20

Why is Poole so expensive? And where else can you sensibly moor up if you want to get ashore?

I think you answer your own question but to expand there are mugs that will pay whatever is asked.

Because it is operated by an inefficient local monopoly called Poole Harbour Commissioners. The number of mouse wigglers in the marina office always surprises me given it is such a small marina.

Shame you didn't spend a night at Salterns, Poole. Would have Poole Quay seem like a pound shop.

Must admit we will not be visiting Poole harbour again for that very reason (except maybe in winter with the discount). Marina prices vary noticably, I was thinking of making a spreadsheet. Visiting River Merdina where will be cheapest? Same with Hamble etc etc as often with us its more about the sail than the destination.

What has stopped me is the level of service/ care received at each of the marina's that there are some expensive marinas we will revisit because we like the attitude of the staff...

It only takes a`few minutes to pay and collect the numbers yet some places can deter you in that time.

A tip on week days it has not been unheard of for the length of boat to be negotiable ;).

Virtually a monopoly. As you say nowhere else (almost) to moor up as all the rest of the north shore is either privately owned or communal opens spaces.

Suggest next time you try Poole Yacht Club. Superior to Quay in every respect and 10 minutes walk from the quay. Not always space though, so you need to check in advance.

Parkstone and Salterns are alternatives, but both a long way from the town centre.

It would be far easier to buy the magazine with the info in. It was either PBO or YM within the last few months and had all of the visitor pricing in for the UK I believe.

One of the points I was making was that the real price for Poole Quay is nothing like the one published in the Mag survey that was done. This may be true of the others as well but Poole was quoted as relatively cheap as they kindly omitted to mention harbour dues etc etc.
 
West Cowes yacht Havehas greatly improved regarding the washing and shower facilities this year so may be worth a phone call - of course, not in Cowes Week. I don't know thier charges but you can ask. Shepherd's Wharf also.
On the Hamble the Harbourmaster's Visitors berths are fine but you'd need a tender to get ashore or the RiverTaxi from Hamble which isn't that cheap, it runs till late evening during the summer (the number for your notebook is 07827 157155(Andy).

Or as one Marina did on a Saturday no charge for staying after 12 noon meant we could catch afternoon tide. No stress pleasant lunch, wait for rain to ease off and no extra charge.


It was expensive but no shower tokens no extra for electricity all adds to cost.

+1 to Poole YC. Even welcomed me in a stinker. No leccy the only snag if you like it.

I arrived in a beam wind, and I have a beamy boat which was a tight fit. Took me 12 attempts to get stern to into my berth (my record) and I think they delayed the start of a race to watch the spectacle. Certainly had quite an audience - I disappointed them by not giving them what they were probably waiting for :)

I've just taken a look and they seem to have put their prices up recently so not sure the mag was wrong at the time of writing.

They're following the Spanish business model,then!
Less customers because of high cost of keeping and berthing a boat? No problem ,put the prices up for those that are ( initially) still willing to pay.

When you go cruising, do not go to Grand Harbour Marina in Malta or Palermo Marina in Sicilly. Ihe costs will make yer dooh dahs shrivel!! :eek:

Yes, we always like a bit of fun. Relatively unusual to have a beam wind, although it was like that 20 years ago when I took my old boat in for the first time. Southerly force 6 so ended up against the north wall sideways on!

Anyway, my berth faces west which makes it easier in most cases, but it is a tight fit between the rows for a 37 footer. Club kindly widened the berth for me - share it with an equally wide Southerly 35 but still room between us. Good thing as would hate to put a mark on his shiny black hull!
 
have a horrible shock and find the price of staying not in the boat haven but the town quay - I have raised this before with PHC at the boat show and the staff on the stand claim that they do surveys to check their pricing is competitive- on being challenged though they do not include in their comparison harbour dues and oh yes - who is the recipient of the harbour dues - same company PHC who set and take the charges for the town quay and boat haven - my conclusion (sadly) total rip off (ps at our last visit we visited poole yc - excellent -welcoming - good facilities and reasonable price ) what a shame that PHC seem to be so greedy
