Visiting Ramsgate

Haringvliet, Holland

The origional starting date (1st of January 2005) of the Haringvliet project is officially postponed to a later date. This means that the lake will stay 'sweet' for at least another 2 years........

Hi , How long are you over here for as Ramsgate is nice but there are many other places to visit on the East Coast? I can vouch for the Crouch!
We were in Holland last year and are planning to go back again the last week of july for a couple of weeks.We really enjoyed the friendly welcoming hospitality od the Dutch.
You will enjoy Ramsgate its a true english fish and chip town.I hope that we can repay some of the hospitality your countrymen have shown us.

Mainly, we have planned a 2-3 days stay in Ramsgate. Reason for this crossing is gaining experience, not so much in visiting good places. But that will happen next time, if we like the crossing (I'm sure we will). I have no worries concerting the British hospitalitiy, been there quite often with never by yacht!

Is it possible to get down to London from Ramsgate in a day? I've only ever stopped over at Queenborough, which was a bit grim.

If it's do-able, seeing the Thames by yacht is well worth it!

And if you get lonely for some Dutch, 675 kilohertz on the medium wave carries my favourite radio station in the world - Arrow Classic Rock, rocking the Netherlands. It's kept me sane many a time on the East Coast...

Sure you can . Just leave Ramsgate on the turn of the tide and she will carry you in.
If you stop at limehouse or St Caths , get a black cab to Brick lane for the best Hot salt beef and mustard begals in the UK./forums/images/icons/smile.gif yummy!

Ramsgate to St K\'s in one?

Yes, it's possible, and occasionally yachts do it. Ramsgate to St K's is 78 miles and you have 12½ hours between the best time for leaving Ramsgate (Dover HW+4½) and the lock closing at St K's after the next high tide (Dover HW+4½). With the strong Thames tide contributing maybe 15 miles, it's necessary to keep up a speed of at least 5 knots to do it in one.

The plan is to leave Ramsgate a little before the end of the ebb, to take the last of the ebb around North Foreland, cross the tide to E. Margate buoy, and then pick up the new flood through the Princes Channel.

It isn't possible to get back on a single tide though.
