Me and First Mate Rik are off for a week early next month and we're thinking of visiting the National Maritime Museum at Greenwich - neither of us has ever been and I've been meaning to for years

So, where's the best place to spend a couple of nights either side of a day at the museum? South Dock seems the obvious choice (although it's annoying that the Thames Clipper service doesn't call at Greenland Pier heading Eastwards until nearly 11:00am) - on this occasion I don't particularly want to head any further up river than necessary for the purpose of visiting the museum - but is it an OK place to stop over? We'll not be bothered about other attractions etc.

How about Greenwich Yacht Club? I think you could walk to the museum from there. I've not stayed there, but have had it recommended to me.

I overlook Greenwich YC at work. I wouldn't park my boat there.... Just my personal opinion... Very lumpy, work going on, the rubbish barges swap over just down river....

Why not try the Cruising Association at Limehouse.
I find their cabins suit me, food on site, but nice choice also within a few hundred yards - plus the Library !!

Greenwich Yacht Club

Hello, I would recommend Greenwich Yacht Club. I had to stay over there last weekend as a fellow sailor had engine trouble and had to be towed. It is lumpy on the outside but there is space on the inside of the pontoon which is much better.

We stayed there on a Rival 32 which draws 1.4 Meters and I did end up sitting in the mud a bit but we stayed upright and comfortable.

The Harbour master is called Ian and he is very helpful. The cost was £10 a night. There is a short walk to Millenium Dome.

As people have previously mentioned Lime House is a good option but not as pretty as St Katharines. :)

I hope you have a good weekend.

Hiya Bigantia

we stayed in south dock easter time and would recommend it, lock is a bit tight on size and tide window but if the tide is right for you its a good place to stay. couple of nice pubs local and transport links.
we would stay there again, we also spent a few days in st kats and like that also but its more expensive and not as friendly.
lime house is good but not pritty.
i would never sit out on the river its just toooo bumpy, even worse than the ramsgate near the fishing boat end..
have a great trip

A very good pub, which few tourists find, is the 'Plume of Feathers'. Not far from the eastern gate of the NMM.

Good beers, wines and the fish-cakes are excellent.

Unfortnately the pie-and-mash shop has gone from the town centre so that's one less dining experience to enjoy.

Also worth visiting the indoor market before it closes for good.

Note also that from St Kat's, Limehouse, or even Galleons Reach you can take the DLR to island gardens and then walk the tunnel under the river to Greenwich thereby taking in another piece of our engineering heritage.

Thanks all, lots of good tips

I'd considered Greenwich Yacht Club but suspected it might be too much of the rapid up and down, suspsicion confirmed :)

Don't think the lock at South Dock will be tight for Brigantia! We're only likkle

Good point about the DLR and the tunnel but I just really want to arrive at Greenwich by river for romantic notional reasons sort of thing

South Dock it is I think (St. Kats is on the agenda for another trip next Spring 'cos I've got plans to take the DLW out on the town for our wedding anniversary - shhhhh, that's a secret :))

That's always assuming that the wind is blowing in the right direction and the engine isn't playing up (again). Way things have gone so far this year I'd not put money on either
