A friend next to us in our marina is a Chilean national who is over here for five years working for the Chilean Navy. He has recently bought a British (SSR) registered yacht, however he's not sure of the situation if he were to visit France. I'm not sure if he has (or can) transferred the SSR to himself yet, however as a foreign national what is the situation for him sailing to, and landing in France?

As he is based in the UK (I assume he has temporary residence in the UK) can he not visit France unincumbered as a fellow EC country?

Any guidance would be appreciated.

Perhaps there is some confusion between the boat and the person. The crew of any boat, regardless of the nationality of the boat, are bound by the same regulations as they would be at any other entry point. You end up with the odd idea that the boat can enter but not the crew. Your friend needs to check his entry status in France. I would hope that if he is welcome in the UK he should be welcome in France. However immigrations officials may not agree.

His British visa (I assume that Chileans need visas?) will NOT cover France, because Britain isn't part of the Schengen agreement. So he'll need to apply for a Schengen visa, which will cover him for most countries in Europe.
