I was wondering what the setup is regardng visiting flat holm (in one's own vessel)? can you just anchor off dingy ashore and have a wander round? Looks like there's not a great deal to see but might be fun to explore somewhere the masses don't go!

Theres a wardern supported by volunteers on the Island. You can anchor but i think that you can only explore the Island as part of one of their organized walks.

Look in the Blue Book - fine, but someone nicked mine. Must have been a short day!
Expect to deal with wardens, risk assessment and all that stuff - is it really worth it. Watch the tide too....

Thanks for the tips. Might give the Wardens a buzz and see how much hassle it really is. Any reason for leaving someone on board at anchor? Just because of the tides etc? surely it's ok if you pick the weather...

Will report back on the results of enquiry

I've been advised not to leave the boat unattended when anchored.
Might be nice to have some mooring bouys there?
I suppose a pontoon is out of the question?
OK I'll get me coat!

I visited with the kids a few years back you can moor off the beach on the nrth side where they land the supply boats
We went up to the farmhouse and had a guided tour by a very nice young lady getting dive nombed by seagulls around the armaments store and to the old fog horn
Didnt take long but quite good fun i would def leave someone on board the tide rips around the holms
Regards

Well here we go...... i arranged the trip through the warden for any of you guys but mainly CBYC last year. It was only a few pounds to get the tour around the island. I have been there loads of times so stayed on our boat and had a great lunch with Snoopy. One yacht broke anchor so i rescued it just in time.
Well worth the visit but just take care.

Seriously consider the eddie currents around there. Sure Snoopy will reinforce this.

It can get really rough, note how the sea kayaks are trying to keep on station! Also an area where Deals are done !

That was the time......the white colvic nearset bottom right dragged and got within a few metres of the rocks on the left.

Great day but Snoopy saved the day by selling me a tender and outboard mid channel which was used as a ferry but also saved the boat about to hit rocks.

Er! I would make the point that the sale of the dinghy was pre-arranged..... not because a yacht and crew needed assistance. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Yes........it was pre arranged. Ps, it is still going fine. I actually use yours rather than the new honda.
Anyway got to make a t-shirt for someone! so must go. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
