I've just had an invite to a 'bit of a do' over a weekend at another RYA affiliated club.

I can understand a charge for the arrangements, food and entertainment but what I don't like is a daily charge for 'facilities, jetties, showers, toilets etc.

Being a member of another RYA affil. club I would have expected no daily charge - certainly we wouldn't dream of charging anyone visiting our club whether or not they were in any club or not

Are we stupid or are these people greedy?

I would expect to pay mooring fees if I was using a pontoon at another club. In my experience there are usually 2 rates, one for members and one for visitors, but still considerably cheaper than nearby marinas.

No, you're not being stupid, just a wee bit out of date. We would not think of charging anyone on our (tidal) pontoons and visitors get use of shower and bar. However, I see nothing odd at paying commercial rates for a "royal" club nearby for mooring as they've had to build the facilities and staff them. Nothing to do with the blue flag; just the level of investment involved.

My club charges visitors a £10 /night for a pontoon with power and water plus showers etc..This is a bargain for marina style facilities but I feel; a bit embarrassed when I visit smaller clubs that dont charge us. In some small clubs around the Bristol Channel I have had people Ive only just met go off and collect petrol for us run us up the pub or shops and generally make us feel very welcome.

I have allways found the small clubs in out of the way places are often the friendliest, probably because visitors are a novelty rather than a nuisance.

PS I remember a Catamaran turning up at Barry from South Africa. He needeed petrol for the final leg of his journey to Bristol so I drove him to the local garage.

I checked he had a means to pay and we filled up 2 x 5 gallon drums. He commented on the way over to pay that 80p/gallon was cheaper than South Africa. He thought I was pulling his leg when I told him it was per litre /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Over here most clubs are free of charge (although patronage of the bar is appreciated) Clubs with 'Royal' in the name will charge, but not outragiously.

It's almost a rule that the grottier the club, the more the kindness is to be found! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

At my YC any visiting YC members / RYA members gets a free mooring, free use of the trot boat service when it's operating, free use of most club facilities, showers, boson services etc.

All we want is for you to turn up and spend money in the bar & galley after that it's all free.

Peter.

I don't belong to any YC but have found in general that small clubs make you welcome anyway and its only polite to offer something, even if its only using the bar etc. In this respect Arun YC has my vote for welcomeness.

This is what I would have expected - I hope I'm not a bit out of date and we don't end up with sailing being totally commercial with everyone trying to squeeze as much as possible from us poor sailors.
The weekend meeting I'm alluding to will probably see the bar takings rocket - at our club that would be sufficient 'profit' to not have to charge for anything else.

Having visited several other clubs locally they all welcome visitors with open arms.
