As most of you know, I have a vire 6 engine that I am trying to get running.

I have a guide to the engine (thanks neil and bob!). I am not too sure where to start. Here is a photo (engine 2b)

http://www.villagephotos.com/pubbrowse.asp?selected=249628

The problems I have include:

There are three wires in the bottom of the photo (Circled). What are these for?
The two side extensions (circled), do not appear in the manual I have!

Lastly, does anyone know where to start? should I just fuel her up and give her a whirl, or should I have her totally stripped down? She has not been run for at least three seasons, but there is compression when I turn the flywheel, and also petrol when I removed the sparkplug.

Also, does anyone know how I can contact the UK Vire agent (it is in the back of PBO, but I can' find it!). Maybe I'm just trying too hard!

Thanks for all your help so far.

Carl

PS do people actually get my PM's?

Your engine looks in good condition, so I should check the spark, points, plug etc. Fill with fresh petrol, squirt a little oil in the plughole before putting the plug back. Probaly turn it over a few times first, before putting the plug in. This will oil the bores and give good compression.

I've only seen your photos, is it 2 stroke.

If you have a good spark, the points are opening at the correct time (which will be a little before TDC (top dead center, when the piston is at the top of it's stroke)) and new petrol or petrol oil mix and the carb is clean, give it a try. I would be surprised if it doesn't go.

Had a very brief look at the site suggested, and seems most of your questions should be answered.

PMs. I didn't look for mine until today by chance when I was altering the name of my picture. Maybe a hint on here......'username' I've sent you a pm will jog their memory.

Fire it up and see if it runs. It wont do any harm to the engine to get some fresh oil into the crankcase and bearings. The worst that can happen is you get tennis elbow winding it up! A spot of carb cleaner wouldnt come amiss either.

New plug and fresh petrol is a must before you go! Also dont run more than around 30 mseconds without cooling water - you will destroy the water pump impellor, and risk damaging the rubber exhaust which MUST be cooled!

From memory the 3 wires are Ground, magneto output, and stop switch, I think. PM me if you are stuck as I live quite nearby judging from your pictures!

MAKE sure that ....

you have good fuel and well lubricated - as the worst thing for a VIRE is to start dry and have poor lub to the bottom end .... the crankcase then loses seal and she won't draw fuel ..... happened to mine !! along with others over the years.

I would stick a little shot of redex or similar in the bore through the plug hole ..... turn it by hand a few revs to distribute well.

If its still on original magneto job ...... which in fact can be a Dynastart, DON'T FLOOD IT .... the spark is so w-e-a-k that its a flicker !!! Better to fit a Mini HT Coil and boost it !!

The water pump in my 6HP Vire uses two bronze gear wheels in the pump. It can be run dry but the oil seals on either side might not like running dry.

Maybe I'm luckly but after replacing the carb mine will start in the spring using the old fuel in the tank. I do however always run the carb dry to prevent oil blocking everything in the card when the petrol evaporates. It doesn't like idling for any length of time as the plug oils up.

The magneto has two wires from the lighting coil. There should be a stop switch which earths one side of the magneto.
