vinyl headlinings

I recollect a reader asking how to brighten up a vinyl headlining, and being advised to paint it with a vinyl paint.I want to smarten up my own headlining, but before doing so wanted to make sure the advice still held good, i.e the painted headlining was still in good condition.
Can you help please?
