I mentioned in the other thread I started on Memory Map and AIS, that my goal was to set up the iPad so that I could view and control the PC screen (at the chart table) when I was in the cockpit. Just done it, which surprised me given my rubbish network abilities.

I used Splashtop (£4.99 app) since it worked on my old iPad but there are other options.

I had to set up an ad hoc network (from network centre) on the PC, but the iPad easily saw it. The system works well - good clear screen on the iPad and you can control the non-touch screen PC with swipes etc.

Well worth having a look at. Feeling very smug at this moment.

Any problems with ads or pop ups at all?

I was on a local 'ad hoc' network so not sure about ads or whether they appear - I didn't see anything on screen. I have set up a wifi onboard anyway (Bullet and Picostation) so will be using that as the connection between PC and iPad as the next step.

Yes I have used this and it does work well. However i tired of the compromise between having the PC displaying properly but being too small on the iPad or having the iPad usable but my PC looking like a Vtech "my first PC" toy with huge writing and icons... Gone back to iPad with Navionics App and a WLN120 digital yacht NMEA to wifi gateway up top, with the PC below running PC Plotter. All a compromise and none of it really as good as it could or should be, especially for the money....

Didn't notice huge writing and icons in my trial run. Since I have a not very good low power 12v tv as my monitor, the iPad screen was better at displaying the contents of the PC screen.

You can also do this with a simple VNC viewer - I use Mocha VNC on the iPhone and iPad and any number of free VNC server apps for the PC/Mac.

I don't use mine on the boat but do use it to remote to servers at work.

Years ago I used VNC but can't remember much about it, but it was that which made me realise there must be a way to have the two devices communicate. What's the difference between my approach and VNC?
