Videoing at sea

I tried using a video camera at sea yesterday, without great success. The sound of the breeze is really loud. It wasn't that windy, I expect I am just using the wrong equipment. I was using the camera's standard built-in microphone. So what should I be using to avoid the noisy rustling/roaring sound of the wind over the microphone?

And why is the sea always slopey? Is that why some boats can go faster than calculated hull speed?

I'm no expert but there are three things I'd suggest.

1. Look to see if video has a windnoise button on it, my earlier one didn't, my latest one does. This takes out a fair bit of the background noise
2. If no button then you can get na external microphone with something that looks like a rabbit fur coat on it. This is what the pros use.
3. If you video is not a waterproof model get a waterproof housing for it. One wave on a video = dead video

Finally, I've found that the waves never look as high on tape as the real thing. Which makes me even more impressed when I see footage shot by the likes of our Ellen and co.

This will only partly solve the problem. It sounds from the sloping sea that user incompetence is a major factor here and you need a boat with a wheelhouse as well as a furry thing if you want tip top results. Wheelhouse - such a good thing that I can't understand why more people don't have them.

That's because some of us sail in the sunny south, where, even yesterday, the diddlyteenth of November, my noble crew shed his fleece and sailed wearing only a gansey and a pair of bar-room trousers as outerwear.

Oh well thats lovely for the pair of you - but a wheelhouse also protects from the hot beating sun relentlessy shining in the Sound of Jura - and the days are longer there so it beats relentlessy for that bit longer. We do of course experience the odd shower so its useful then - and finally it really comes into its own to stand on and watch the dolphins frollicking

All modern camcorders seem to have mics that are much too sensitive and being mounted on the camera does not help, they are geared up for the ave. happy
snapper type. Just like any pro would not use a stills camera with a built in flash.

My own Sony picks up my breathing and fingers on the control.

A pro mike with hairy thing will cost a good few quid.


I would start off by trying a reasonable external mike with a good foam filter. Use a longish cable and mount the mic somewhere a bit more sheltered.

If your serious you could add a bit of background music after and turn the "Live" sound down a touch.

Now that's what I call a boat.
How much and whats the waiting list - never mind how much, if I have to ask that I cannot afford it so sod the expense, put me down for 1. Also handy because the sea shouldn't slope on that should it?

if not, that's not a patio (in terms some of us understand) but a penthouse .....

Sunny South - you must be joking!
I would not buy another boat without a wheel house - even in boiling sunshine like last summer it was nice and cool. And all that rain and cold wind - haven't worn my oillies for years!

It was a beautiful weekend - had everything up on way back from Cowes - Main Mizzen - Mizzen Staysail, and Spinnaker. 8 knots in 13 knots on the beam - wonderful - why haven't I used the boat in previous winters?
