I love the stuff! The supplies I brought back from France are almost exhausted so I'm going to try a tin of each and if it's anywhere near as good as the real stuff then I'll buy 'some' ..... I will report back.

Hmmm, never been particularly impressed with Aldi food, but I do love Cassoulet, so I'll be interested to hear opinions...

I've made it in the slow cooker a few times- with pork belly- but can't get the flavour of the real stuff.

Mind you, my home made effort doesn't set when it cools....

If you want the real thing go to Lidl in France and Belgium where they stock Daube d'Flandres which is all horse. It was a mainstay of our mates boat food shopping, at 99c a tin, finding it's way into many of his wife's very fine pies and stews, until we read the ingredients list.

Cassoulet, years ago on my very first chanel crossing, middle of the night, starving, cold, dark, miserable, and wet and exhausted, the skipper brought up a large mug of a french meal he had picked up, It tasted like the best food I had ever eaten, I had no idea what was in it, but it was so good! there were lots of strange crunchy bits, which I ate with gusto. Next morning when washing up the mugs, mine was completely empty and the skipper's had lots of little bones in it, the crunchy bits I had so enjoyed the night before! He told me it was Cassoulet, and I shall be off to Lidl tomorrow to get some for my boat stores!

Got two tines of Cassoulet and two of Petite Sal. Tried the Cassoulet- it was fine. Went back today to stock up with some more and they were sold out.

Ach well, just have to make do with home made until next winter.

Not for "If you want the real thing go to Lidl in France and Belgium ..."Mike.

Is there a limit to how much you can bring back? ..... the reason I ask is because we've been invited over to Normandy for a working-ish holiday June/July.

None left in SW Scotland either! ... :(

Drive! Take a big van or an estate at least. Fill it with all the nice stuff they have there. 10 litre wine boxes, petite sal, ovomaltine biscuits, mackerel fillets in white wine, creme de cassis,Beaufort cheese....
