Hi All, I don't normally venture in here being a "raggie" but my boss has asked me to look into something he's thinking of doing and it's a good excuse to browse the forums in work's time!

He has a big MoBo with a Gardner diesel driving a 24 volt alternator plus a Perkins diesel driving a generator and at least a dozen or so big marine deep-cycle batteries. He's thinking of fitting a couple of Victron Phoenix 24/3000 inverters to handle domestic 240 volt loads for short periods when neither the engine nor the generator are running. He's also thinking of fitting their BMV 501 battery monitor.

Has anyone used these inverters and has any comments / advice?
 
I've got a 2000w Phoenix inverter and charger unit.
So far it has worled well. It boils a 2500w kettle in a couple of minutes even though it is rated to 2000w and keeps the batteries nicely charged when plugged into shore power.
They appear to be well made and have a good reputation.
 
I've had Victron inverter/chargers on 2 narrowboats, happy with both. Supplied by a company in Whaley Bridge (Derbyshire). Victron's Dutch I think and used extensively there.
BMV 501 also very good and useful piece of kit. Not the cheapest but gives good range of read-outs.
 
Victron do sine-wave inverters that can be linked to provide one larger source of 230V - which is easier to manage than two independent inverters. They also do ones which will chime in to augment shore/generator supply when load goes beyond what's available.

All good stuff imo - I have a 1994 Vetus badged Victron modified sine-wave inverter/charger, which works very well indeed.
 
I've got a Victron Multiplus 2.5Kw and it is an awesome piece of kit. It conditions the batteries as well as providing 240V and up to 5KW overloading for about 5 minutes.

I use it in conjunction with a 4KVA Genny, which can auto-start (controlled from the Victron).

It supplements the output of the Genny and / or the shore supply.

You can add up to 5 units in series to give you more power (providing you've got the batteries to support the load).

Thoroughly recommended!
 
Interesting that Elling changed at some point in the past from the Victron units to the Mastervolt ones. I got the impression (and it was just an impression) that it was after a few problems with Victron - but everyone else seems happy with Victron it seems /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

From my perspective - the Mastervolt stuff seems pretty good so far...

My impression is that Dutch shipbuilders in de 'Custom Built' market (mostly steel displacement ships) prefer Mastervolt iso Victron.

I don't think is has to do with quality, but with product range.....
Mastervolt offers an extended range of switch-board components incl. remote controls for the chargers/inverters offering the possibility to create a custom built 'design look' switch-board iso of a 'collection' of components and switches, often seen on 'production line' ships.
