My Volvo Penta hour meter has packed up so rather than buy a complete and expensive panel thought I might try a vibration activated hour meter.Has anybody had experience of these on boats?
Not vibration activated but CPC sell Curtis Hour meters. These are connected to the positive ignition feed so only start counting when the ignition is on. Alternatively (and as I did for ease of wiring) connect one to the switched side of the start battery (as we always turn this on just before starting the engine and switch it off again afterwards) - so it effectively counts how long the engine battery has been switched on for - but serves the same purpose.
Why Vibration activated? Not sure these exist, the ones I found were just power activated (ie the count in hours whenever they have power supplied to them).
I had a vibration hour meter on a previous boat and it worked well, same principle as a self-winding watch. It was German made, a Grasslin or similar name.
Also had a vibration activated one, it under-read considerably, but variably which made oil change intervals difficult to assess There may be good and bad quality ones.
Sorry Ohlsen Skip BUT I simply asked Motortech to fit a vibration counter on my Volvo MD1B and it was accurate to within seconds!
FWIW current Perkins has an electrical gizmo equally reliable.
I have had a Grasslin meter for about 15 years which I have swapped from engine to engine. First rate piece of kit, fit and forget. The only trouble will be getting hold of one, I think mine came from the Cruisermart catalogue (now long gone).
