I am looking at the Standard Horizon GX2200 to replace the old set that came with the boat.

I am probably being stupid but cannot see in the advertising blurb if you can take the AIS information from the VHF and share it with a Standard Horizon Chart Plotter (already on boat) or would I need a separate AIS receiver for the CP?

Has anyone any experience with this radio? Is it as good as the blurb suggests?

Many thanks

The Gx2100 has an NMEA0183HS output for the AIS messages (VDM is the relevent sentence) at 38.4Kb. It also has a 4.8Kb NMEA0183 output for DSC and DSE sentences. The Gx2200 is probably pretty similar but I guess with the addition of GPS-related sentences - the manual will be online if you don't have it.

You should be able to feed those into your chartplotter. Again check the manual.

I've been very impressed with my SH radio. A big improvement on the previous one.

Edit: Manual available at this link. http://www.standardhorizon.com/inde...B1B8A53F18ED6C711B7&DivisionID=3&isArchived=0

The Gx2200 has better NMEA control than the Gx2100 and allows you to select either 4.8Kb or 38.4Kb output (except the AIS info is always at 38.4Kb as too verbose for 4.8Kb).

The GX2200e is a great bit of kit. I bought the set last year and installed it myself and linked it through to my SH CP330i without too many problems. It's recommended to get the latest software update for your CP.
Standard Horizon provide great support -Sam Ruddy is the man to speak to if you have further questions.

Fead the full manual ...
(other vesions are also available)

The other one I quite like is:

If all else fails, read the manual.

Also, I agree with Robinbirch, the GX2200 is an excellent piece of kit. Installed it last year and have it connected to OpenCpn on my tablet via a Bluetooth connection. However, the GX2200 could be used as AIS on its own, although the radar type image is maybe a bit small and fiddly.

I don't have the GX2200, but a Radio Ocean put out by Furuno with integrated AIS Receiver. Rather than the Radar type image on teh small screen, I prefer the list view which starts with the closest first. I prefer this as I can assess if there is anyone giving me an immediate concern.

Maybe it is just the Furuno model but I find a VHF with integrated AIS is power hungry, so at night when my solar panel is not adding to my battery power I will keep it turned off and just turn it on every so often depending on how far away the last vessel was to see if anyone has come closer. In retrospect I should have bought a stand alone AIS which goes into a sleep mode until something wakes it up.
