A boat in our marina called “Clairvoyant” asking if they can have a lock out.

Over = talk to me
Out = done talking now, shut up

[/ QUOTE ]

Correctly,

Over = "I've finished talking now, and <u>am expecting a response</u>"
Out - "I've finished talking now, <u>and am not expecting a response</u>"

But do truly agree with you - the term 'over and out' is truly self-contradictory!

People gabbling over the VHF bugs me , always has done , we used to train the female ATC ground controllers how hard it was to understand them by taking them out on the airfield and playing back a recording of them giving vital movement instructions , totally incomprehensible . Speak slow and clear , don't gabble

Well, it seems that the high cost of the Solent has made a lot of them migrate Eastwards.
Really daft quantity this year of Radio Checks and improper use. VHF Operators licence? Not worth a carrot.

Thames Coastguard telling someone to shut up on 16 and move to a working channel, happened again today.

Not totally contradictory, when speaking to a member of the fairer sex:
out - I have finished and don't want a response, however better add:
over - knowing I will get a response anyway /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Trained navy comms - same thing: speak slowly and clearly and be brief.

Just thought of another one: people making up their own phonetic alphabet.

Spell boat name: Willie Arthur Nero Kilo Everett Roger

[/ QUOTE ]

agreed on that one , the american way is bad enough but when they make up thier own it just confuses things even more

Solent Coastguard, this is Fanny Roger: There's a sailing boat capsised just off the end of the jetty.

Fanny Roger, this is Solent Coastguard: Can you give the exact position, please, and are you able to assist?

Silence. Apparently Fanny Roger has gone to the pub. And we will never know if the capsised sailing boat was 40 meters or 4 meters, or whether there was any REAL danger, which jetty it capsised off, or even if the sailing boat was righted by its own crew!!

Wretched DSC alarms going off all the time. Can't turn the DSC facility off. Can't turn off the below decks speaker, when the cockpit one is working. RFI on Ch 16.

Oh, and Over and Out, peeps repeating things three times, when reception is good. Saying "Yacht" Saucy Sue etc.

Making up your own phonetic spelling on the fly is good sport when dealing with call centres or generally awkward ppl on the phone...

Not just east, there was a constant stream of them to Brixham & Falmouth coastguards this weekend.
