I know nowt about aerials but --. I have a spare VHF aerial on my mizzen which is terminated with a plug so that I can swap to it if the one on the main mast fails. It occurs to me that I could use it to improve the patchy FM reception on my car type radio which currently uses a low level, car whip aerial. Is there an adaptor so that I can keep my VHF plug intact and enable me to connect the spare aerial to the FM radio?

Yes, you need an SO239 to phono adapter. May also be called an SO239 to radio adapter, SO239 to car radio adapter etc. Google is your friend.

Bit of a pedantic point back, but you can't adapt a modulation type to a frequency.
Marine band VHF is also FM, and "FM" broadcast band is also in the VHF spectrum.

But the real question is already answered above.
