VHF: Simplex to Duplex comms.

The question arose because of a misunderstanding by the OP of VHF operating procedures.

In part, yes. The other factor which helped to create confusion was the addition of American channels to a table of channels in a manual for a UK-specific receiver. Remove those, identify which channels are used for ship-to-ship comms (have now got these listed, thanks to another source), and the confusion has evaporated.

But what has stuck me about this thread, is that rather than addressing the questions being raised, many people have simply said, "do the course". Why - are they on commission ?

People frequently post on here about diesel engine problems, antifouling, the choice of stainless steel, anchors, issues surrounding deck fittings, and the 1001 other subjects related to boats. But I've never once read of anyone being told: "if you do a course it will answer your questions".

So why have a couple of basic questions related to VHF operations been considered as being so different ?

Your questions were answered within the first few posts but you preferred to not believe the answers, or argue with the answers.

The matter of confusion about US channels was mentioned quite early on. You continued without apparently having read the reference material that was given you, or even the reference material you gave.

If you can't be bothered then why should any one else on the forum?

Because to use the thing legally you have to have licence. In order to get the licence you have to pas the test. In order to pass the test you either have to do some thorough study or do the course.

You were asking questions that once you have done the course you will by and large know the answers to.

As I said earlier we are happy to help with any aspects not made clear but not to be used as a substitute for the course.

That's because there's no legal requirement to do a course on those subjects, or anything else in sailing. There is for using a VHF.

My OP was about understanding VHF issues in order to determine whether or not a particular set was suitable to purchase - and there's no legal requirement to do any course or hold any certificate prior to purchasing a VHF.
