Vhf radio - squelch won't cancel background noise

Hi folks,
As in the title I have a problem in that the squelch no longer clears the background noise on the vhf. I've tried the emergency aerial and that makes no difference so am I looking at a problem with the radio or could this be a wiring issue?

I would imagine that your VHF is OK but receiving a lot of interference from something.
Our club support boat had a new Depth sounder cum GPS fitted. The interference is horendous from the sounder. In that case a different antenna mounted further away helped a bit.
Any way the simple test is to remove the antenna plug n thevHF and see if that stops the noise. If it does then try turning off all other devicees on the boat. If turning off a device stops the noise but it is still there with antenna disconnected then the noise is coming through the power line. A filter would be appropriate on the battery line either at the offending device or at the VHF. PM me for advice making a filter. good luck olewill

Haven't just fitted LED lights have you?

Not just fitted. We have got LED lights but they tend to be switched off when we've got the radio on. Got a few things to check when I get back to the boat thanks.

Does this apply on any channel? It's possible that there's some kind of local interference on one channel, but otherwise it sounds like a radio fault to me. I can't imagine it being a wiring issue.

Found the problem, it's the solar panel regulator
Ferrite coil around the wires seems, at the moment, to have sorted it.
