I reckon there are far too many radio check requests in the Solent area, people in other areas seem to manage perfectly well without them. I suspect most of them are not intended to check the radio at all simply but to announce to their friends that they are out on the water!

In fact, last year I made less than ten transmissions. Two just after relaunch to check the radio because I had had the mast down and the others were to various marinas and yacht clubs to request a berth. The first was on channel 67 when I asked the CG if I might try a check of 16, which they kindly agreed to, and the calls to the marinas were on 80.

I think the CG wasted too much time looking for people who hadn't bothered, or had forgotten, to tell them they'd arrived. So now the departure info is logged, to help start the search when the alarm is raised. Onus is on the matelot to tell someone they have arrived. And quite right too IMHO.
 
Quite so, along with Twisterowner I rarely use the thing. In 1989 I bought a handheld and traffic was so light in the South West that in was half a season before I picked up a transmission on Ch16. I regret that the Solent problem is gradually moving south though. Where has this radio check thing come from? I have never seen it suggested in print, or stressed on any course?
