Had a survey today and the man said the vhf (x2) would have to be replaced as it has no dsc. What "rules" will i be breaking if i continue to use the existing radios, and will my insurance be invalid if i dont update?

[/ QUOTE ]And what else did your "surveyor" come up with. Any so called surveyor that came across with such inaccurate comments would make me VERY suspicious as to his (or god forbid, her) credentials.

[/ QUOTE ]Unless it was a survey for coding the boat for commercial use, in which case DSC is necessary. If the boat is for non commercial, you are right, and it would be interesting to know who it was.

If boat for private use only and no chartering / commercial - tell him to get educated !!

It is only advisory .....

If you are replacing them - can I have the old ones ?

Interesting. I'm about to get a condition/valuation survey done by some one recomended to me. He assures me that he is sensible as he owns a 70 year old gaff cutter. I will find out in a few weeks.

Doesn't seem particularly relevent to carrying out a survey of a fibreglass catamaran. Does he have any other qualifications?

I would question whether the bloke knows what he is doing? Who is he. I would be very warey of any other of his recommendations. I would really question the competance of your surveyor.

Now I'd take that as proof that he's not sensible.

I have a question ... prompted by this reply and others ..... and that I in doing surveys before was often led by owner / client comments ....

Was the Survey comment based on anything said by client to the Surveyor ... maybe Client mentioned Charter work during the survey ?? Maybe Client mentioned that he was concerned about state of the VHF's ....

We don't know what was said between them prior to this comment being placed in the report ????

I think the surveyor was correct to comment that neither radio has DSC even though your not legally obliged to change. In any event I would only change one set ,giving you the option to switch off the DSC set if regular alarms are keeping everyone awake on a night passage.
