Help!!! My old, but up to now trusty, Sailor VHF has stoped recieving, I know it transmits fine but the speaker does not even click when fist mike PTT button is pressed and released. any ideas, is it worth taking apart and having a gentle prod around?

Is it possible to try another mic? If there is nothing when the button is pressed it could be the button or something in the mic, the lead or the plug. If you can prove it is in the radio itself and you decide you will have to buy a new unit, then try taking it apart and look carefully at the solderjoints. I have fixed many electronic items by just going over the PCB and remaking the solderjoints.

I agree with Allan. well worth opening up and having a look round for bad contacts, or even broken wiring. The lack of 'click' operating the PTT switch may be the switch itself or it's wiring, or may be the speaker has come disconnected. If there is a jack for external speaker output, maybe that is faulty?

Or it could be something failed on the PCB, killing the audio stage.

If it's transmitting then there's nothing wrong with the switch in the mike. The fault could be almost anywhere in the receive circuitry, but the complete absence of click suggests it's likely to be in the later stages of the audio bit. I would start at the loudspeaker and work backward.

Are you sure that you have not simply turned the speaker off without knowing it. On a previous set that I had I tried to call a marina that did not answer on channel 80 and so I tried to dial in 37 [having forgotten that you should go on to P1 for 37!]. Either the 3 or the 7 switched off the speaker and it took a long time to work out why I was getting nothing.
