My VHF bought in the States works exactly as one bought here in the UK. Not sure if the whole range of frequencies is available though but I haven't looked for one thats not there yet!

So far so good with all these replies, which only address the bureaucracy, which most of us will be happy to flout. But how do I get Channel 37, Channel M and Channel M2 on an American set? They don't appear on the hardware.

Re: CE marking

Before the CE marking requirements of the Radio and Telecommunications Terminal Equipment Directive there was a requirement for the equipment to be nationally type approved either to MPT standard or to the Marine Equipment Directive (SOLAS Convention).

Now any radio equipment manufactured for use in Europe must be CE marked and carry the Alert symbol if appropriate as well as meeting the requirements of the National Interface Requirements of the flag state for the vessel.

This does not apply to US manufactured equipment because it isn't Europe. However if the equipment does not conform to the above it is illegal to fit and cannot be licensed on UK vessels.
