Surprised to see this old posting pop back up. Anyway, I came up with a simple solution. Rather than muck around with twin speakers, with balanced Ohms, I found that a single speaker mounted high in the companionway was perfect for inside and outside use, as the opposite wall seems to act as a sound relector, so it can be heard clearly from the helm.

I used a Navico waterproof unit about 110mm square, and attached it with Velcro pads. Easy!

Re: Wiring a VHF Extension Speaker

That implies connecting the output of two amplifiers (VHF & Stereo) to a single speaker - not sure about the wisdom of that. Because the VHF is mono and the Stereo is stereo (!), I'm planning to keep them separate.

Installing a stereo is one of my projects for this winter - I'm going to mount the speakers at the back of the cockpit - well away from the bulkhead compass.

Re: Result

Jeremy,

It came back to the top because I've posted to it with my solution. I've been carrying a paper copy of it round with me for weeks as reference whilst I researched and implemented my solution.

I thought of doing as you have done but concluded that I didn't want the cockpit VHF speaker working when we're tied up somewhere and down below socialising - we sometimes keep the VHF on in the background - it's occasionally good entertainment! But I wouldn't want to impose it on my neighbours.!

Re: Wiring a VHF Extension Speaker

Right but you should be able to drive one or both speakers from a single mono lead. Also the idea I have is to not have both amps connected at once - either the stereo drives the speakers or the VHF does.

I already have twin stereo speakers at the back of the cockpit and tried putting another speaker near the wheel but it pull the compass out by 10 degrees.
