We've had DSC since 2003 as that was all that could be bought. It's a NASA SX35 not an Icom and works very well. In 5 years I recall ONE DSC call which was a Nav warning from Thames coastguard of a telegraph pole floating in the Blackwater.

not so far off for the Baltic... The "sailors annual book" book (in local languages for Sweden, Finland etc.) actually lists many yachts with their mobile phone number. You see a boat, it's sail number or name&home port, and you can look up the mobile phone number from that book. Granted not all are listed, but many are.
