YBW.com are selling two NASA DSC VHF radios at the moment. The more expensive one has DSC / ATIS. I know about DSC, but what is Atis? The sales blurbs are identical.

Will I need the Atis version - my boat is likely to stay in UK inshore waters. The cost difference is £60.

thanks

ATIS stands for "Automatic Transmitter Identification System" and does what the name says. It is compulsary on some inland waters, like the Rhine and is meant to have some control over who uses the VHF bands. The ATIS number is transmitted every time you press the send button. Your hear a short melodic sound, less than a second long.

It has nothing to do with DSC and it has been around longer than DSC.
