Just bought a Standard Horizon HX270E

Bit worried that display shows USA
Booklet states USA, CAN and INT are avaliable (INT=International)

Channel 67 feeds me a signal which sounds like a helicopter.

Any idea why? I may need 67 if ever the RNLI or coastguard told me to go to 67, so would like to radio is ok.

Thank you

In the US, CH67 = 156.375MHz simplex. In the EU/International it's exactly the same. Many channels are the same. I have a Raymarine RAY54E which has a good channel list at the end of the manual. You can get it from here.

As to why 67 shows interference, it's difficult to say. It's a handheld, so move location. If you're at home, go outside where your PC & just about everything else inside shouldn't affect it. If you're on the boat, then switch off everything & try to narrow it down. If you have another radio, switch that on as well & if it doesn't show the interference, then you may have a problem with the SH.

no expert on VHF but I have that handheld on board and I seem to remember having to set it to INT setting

cannot explain the noise on 67 but you do need to select the correct channel set for UK or USA working because some channels that are two frequency (duplex) channels in the UK are only single frequency (simplex) channels in the USA using what is the ships frequency in the UK for both ship and shore stations.

This list gives the frequencies of UK and USA channels plus their uses in the Solent area

and here is just the International list

I suggest you read the Operating instructions where you will find Section 5.5 tells you how to select the appropriate channel set.

I have an Icom 421 and that showed USA on it. I lookedit up in the instruction manual and it is was a case of pushing the program up and down buttons at the same time. This changed it over to int. Your set will no doubt be different.

Helicopter noise on some sets is an indication that the battery is low.....

[/ QUOTE ] That figures... see the post about charging or not charging the battery.

Even rocket scientists have to read the instructions sometimes /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Cheeky.
However, noise went after 20 mins, and I left radio scanning all channels, all day, so in this case it couldn't have been a low battery indication.

I found out how to scan all channels from this funny book thing which came with the radio. They stick it right at the top of the box. Like people are going to read that first, eh? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Thank you guys

All problems fixed.

Have not read the battery thread yet, but I've had it running all day on USA and channel 67 cleared itself.

Heard a great story with coastguard and RNLI going on.

Heard some amazing story about industrial action over in France , they'll let you in to port, but not out. What do they do, mine the entrance once you are tucked up for the night?

Will now go and read the battery thread.

Started reading the manual a while back - quite interesting.

Well not exactly!!!!!!!!!! Check again.........Channel 67 is a chat frequency in the USA and I believe limited to 1 watt on many radios to comply with the local laws.....We prefer full power here for calling HELP..
