VHF ?? Can I legally

Take my Dsc radio of my boat and use it on my mates boat???We are going fishing tomorrow and he has just rung to say his radio is knackered, and could I bring mine.
Dsc radio as I read it, is registered to my boat now, and not the operator so if anything was to happen the coastguard would be looking for my boat not a 15ft CJR I may be wrong!!! What do you all think???

DSC radios default to a conventional VHF radio from new, if no MMSI number is input. Assuming that your MMSI number has been input then when the radio powers up the DSC element of the radio will become enabled. The only means of removing the MMSI number is with a factory reset and you won't want to go to that trouble.
IMHO you can use your radio on a boat other than your own but you will not be able to transmit distress, safety or urgency alerts automatically. You will of course be able to transmit these alerts using the old currency. As to whether its legal or not I'm not sure.

At first thought answer was NO, but then re-read you question and realised you said mate had vhf on boat but knackered. Provided he has valid ship licence see no reason why you shouldnt take your set with you as it is the SHIP that is licenced. Howver you must not use the DSC facilities as that would create cinfusioin re which vessel as you rightly say.....all IMHO ...as usual....

Take the radio and use it as normal. If you have an emergency (God forbid) just press the little red button so that they know where to look. You can worry about what "they" are going to do to you once your back safe and sound. The only time you are really going to need DSC is if the boat is sinking so they wont be looking for any boat cos it'll be gone, wont it ;-)

you going fishing in your back garden? suggest you look at the shipping forecast before you untie, a radio will not be much use.

My suggestion would be to call your local Coastguard when you leave and advise them of the change. We are not the licencing agency but we do have a large database of MMSI numbers. If you advise them if you have a problem they will know what to look for. I don't think it will be a problem. On the legal side I will make no comment. The RA may have something to say though.

We've been battered by wind and gales for the past week!!!!!!!
However a nice brisk westerly is our forcast and there's a few little coves and bays around the Gower, that we can tuck into with an inshore wreck or two that should be fun for some Bass only down side is a beach launch and recovery BBRRRRR!!

Thanks for your reply. I will take the radio as a matter of course, I was just wondering on the legal technicalities!!!!
Very nice to to see someone in the Front Line making the effort to spend some time with us "Fools" (me in particular) and "Mad Persons" in general!!!
