Two part post...

1. I have a XM200 Hand Held transceiver that only transmits and doesn't receive. It's under warranty so it will be going back but any clues before I send it off? I've read the manual and twidled the knobs. The marina can hear me but I'cant hear them.

2. I have accumulated some electronic gubbins (fixed VHF, Chart Plotter) that I want to get fixed to MVII. At the same time tidy up the aux. wiring around the dashboard - I figure its about half a days work drilling and routing the wires - any recomended electrical people in the Chichester area.

Regards,

Barry, just a long shot. Your VHF it wouldn't happen to be an American one would it? Alternatively does it have a flip switch for US/International channels. Some US channels are not quite in sync with ours. Lastly, what range are you expecting from it? Try using the set closer to the Marina.

Hi Byron - yep it does switch USA/INT - I'm sure I had it on INT (might have to rope JFM into some obscure channel tests at home). Line of sight to the lock in the marina was about 200 yards. If it can't do that then its a pretty pathetic bit of shi**y kit - mind you it was cheap <G>. Thanks for the sugestions.

If it's only 200 yards then that definately ain't the problem. I reckon you should ensure it is switched to 'INT' also try it with other boats on other frequencies. Strange as it may sound sometimes with short distances you are best switching to low power when transmitting. What I used to do was have a bit of tape stopping the switch being accidentally put over to the U.S. Channels. Lastly, go in the Marina office and flick your switch a few times to see if a click comes over their radio.

Barry, sounds like yours in bust. I think if it were set to "USA" you would be neither receiving nor transmitting AFAIK. I have 2 handhelds at home that you're welcome to borrow to test it out. Hang on to one of them until yours comes back from the repairers if you like, in case you go out on MV2.

PS did you get your ticket? How did it all go? Tell all

Known Problem....

Hi Barry,

IT'S NOT BUST.

I also had the same problem some time ago with the XM2000, I could transmit but not receive - however if I held the function button (I think) I could receive. Basically there is a sequence to reset it to work how it should.

I kept the reset sequence on the back of the VHF, therefore I will let you know when I get home to check it out. Or you could like I did call the XM People, the techhie guy talked me through it, very helpful people.

Anyway I'll let you know Asap.

the opposite for me...

Mine seems to receive but not transmit very well. Using it right outside Torquay marina and Lyme Regis Harbour on both ocasions I was told I was unreadable despite being only a few hundred yards away.

I was going to take it back to Port Solent where I bought it as it must be coming up to a year old...

Re: fixing it?

1 Buy wife new shoes
2 with the vhf: Press all the buttons in turn.
3 Press several buttons together, alternatly shouting and wispering.
4 Tap it sharply against things, but no damaging it.
5 Take the battery out, recharge it, and tap the thing again.
6 Swear at it a lot, loudly, such that wife will offer to take it back if you won't.
7 Relax whilst wife goes to shop and does the necessary browbeating and mebbe even gets free (say) chart from the shop becos of the aggro.
8 Listen carefully for clicking of new shoes down the pontoon, to look busy on her
return with fixed unit or replacement all sorted.

Still only lowly middie - Re: Capt. B. Doswell

Day one was fine - mostly in the marina, loads of going round in circles and 3-point turns. Lots of going backwards in tight spaces, had to fend off one boat - whoops no name / packdrill. Took a trip up to K pontoon (Kev B) really glad not to be up there it looks awfully tight <G>.

Low on go-juice we decided to go to Sparks (which is when we found the VHF was confused). So we moored near the lock and I ran up to ask to go out. WX was lousy and we left a low tide so the depth sounder was pinging alarm almost all the time (set it to 1.4m) when we cleared the swinging moorings in Chichester harbour vis. was poor (or less than 50yards) so we decided to sod it and turn back.

So I still need to do the high speed component - scheudled for March. But if I can find some likely crew we shall take her out in a couple of weekends time. Hint Hint Kev - might be bored playing with his new toy by then <G>.

So in short - not qualfied yet but I know a heck of a lot about slow speed stuff in a single out drive with a 260HP to play with - lashings of fun. And I'm good togo backwards in to the mooring in driving rain and strong winds.

Cheers all.

Yes well that's the easy bit. Everyone and his brother knows that. But who was he talking to?
