VHF and all that jazz

So if you want to go into London they like you to have a VHF or mobile to call in to Tower but you need a licence to use a VHF . Mobile phone calls to Tower must be a pain in the backside for them and i am sure they would rather people replied over the radio rather than a mobile phone .
Ive been up there a few times over the years and because i dont have a VHF licence i dont use it . I can get in trouble if i do !
Surely the idiots that do abuse radio law are going to do it anyway so why make it law for everyone and stop tw ats like me from keeping in contact when i decided i wanna go a bit tidal ?
Before you all say go and do the course . I dont need to .I can go there when i like but not allowed to reply on the VHF . It all seems very odd to me .

With the Olympics looming its going to be a bit mental out there so i thought i would bring the subject up .

Hi, I'm not suggesting that you break the law,but if you use correct protocol and use the radio correctly, how will anyone know you dont have a licence? On the other hand,if you dont know how to use a VHF and the correct protocol, working channels, emergency procedure and all the rest you will appear to be a wally. In that case best not to use it.Your call.

My call is not to use it . My point is maybe many people will be wizzing into town during the olympic period and probably should have one . But i guess its not a simple as that .
In fact this thread has pretty much said .
You need a VHF to go into London .
You need a licence to use a VHF .
Dont use the VHF when you are there after buying one and paying to be trained to use one unless its an emergency .
You can use a VHF in an emergency without a licence .

I thought the PLA bylaws now required it.....or am I dreaming?

I also suspect there will be no 'wizzing' into London during the games from what we have heard from the police. Passage plans will be required , in advance.

Vhf Requirements On The Thames
18 August 2006

British Waterways London is advising all customers of a change in VHF equipment requirements for vessels navigating the tidal Thames.

From 1 September 2006, new General Directions from the Port of London Authority (PLA) come into force making it compulsory for all boats over 13.7m (45ft) to be equipped with and use VHF radio ; Previously the Directions only affected boats from 20m (65ft).

The new rules apply throughout the tidal Thames, although an exemption exists for boats travelling onto the Thames at Brentford and heading west to Teddington.

The change will affect the vast majority of narrowboats who use the Limehouse to Brentford section of the river.  Boaters are also reminded of the need to have a valid VHF licence and operators certificate.  Please note it will be possible to apply to the PLA harbourmaster for an exemption for non VHF boats to be escorted by VHF compliant boats. For more information contact the Port of London Authority , which manages the tidal Thames , on 020 7743 7912 . I have a passage plan . Launch at Twickenham , pick up Forbsie and Scott and head into town with no intention of stopping :D
Get back to Twickenham and get lashed up in the Barmy arms , yeah baby :D
