Thinking of fitting an aerial to improve reception on AM/FM radio - currently there is a 'pig-tail' wire hanging behind set. Reception not always good in marina at low water!

Although dedicated AM/FM aerials are available, thought that fitting a VHF aerial could also be used as emergency VHF aerial if necessary - by disconnecting the AM/FM radio and connecting the VHF. (I know that splitters are available for this purpose, but would rather not go down this line due to the extra expense).

Has anyone used a VHF aerial solely for an AM/FM radio reception? Is the reception inferior to using a dedicated AM/FM aerial - or is the difference in quality minimal?

Any comments / advice would be appreciated.

Thanks
David.
