VHF/AIS cable, antenna and connections

Finally got the maths right: 18m/60' Hyperflex 10 has 0.86dB loss vs the RG8X's 2.13dB, which means 1.27dB or about 25% disadvantage. Considering that the 25W transmission power bracket is well oversized (AIS uses 2Watts and does work in down-to-earth setups), and the antenna has approximately 3dBi gain, I stop worrying.

If I go further, I get HF gear and a satphone... I don't nurture high hopes about beyond-horizon communications on VHF.

I was able to establish reliable (ish) comms from the HF rig on the boat, south coast of Ireland to a friend west of Cambridge on 1.9 MHz this summer. It was weak, but usable.
