having just taken the mast down on Feeling Good and inspecting same, I discovered that the vhf aerial I installed a mere 18 months ago is literally crumbling into ally oxide dust /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

I would appreciate any recommended replacements (preferably with a windicator/ windex 'built in') and supplier details if poss. The current cable setup runs down to a detachable plug / socket at the mast foot.

thanks
Rob

After the experiences with mine, I wouldn't buy one of these solderless types.... a proper soldered plug to screw in is far more reliable when installing, IMO.

Hi,
I had the same problem with a 'cheap ' antenna bought 3 years ago. I have just bought a very high quality Metz antenna off ebay, brand new for 39.95. A bargain in my humble opinion as it really is a quality bit of kit. I believe the chap was called Salty John, if you look on ebay for him. I know he also does a windex for same antenna also.
Regards,
Matt

I've always used Shakespeare. Strong and reliable. Since you have a yacht, a 6dB gain would be the max I would recommend given the heel you experience. Any more dB and you may well decrease the operational range. Finally, have as few joins in the cable as poss.
