The Bukh 10 on my Elizabethan 30 feeds into an ancient waterlock the size of a quality street can, beyond that it goes straight out through the topsides, no swan neck. I was thinking about fitting the Vetus Waterlock again without a swan neck fitting as the exhaust outlet is right under the side deck. Does this sound OK?

Yep! seeing as you replied to yourself..........

Seriously though, I don't see any reason why you cannot fit the exhaust as you suggest except for the possibility of rain or perhaps wave action causing the exhaust to fill although it is unlikely waves would be high enough to reach the gunwales. You could always fit a 2"stop cock in the exhaust close to the skin fitting - just remember to open it before starting the engine........

Whatever you do make sure that the new waterlock that you fit is the same or greater volume of the current one / or that it has a larger volume than the exhaust pipe, other wise you risk the waterlock becoming full and the water backing up into engine.

Have been 'lucky' enough to witness this when replacing stainless volvo trap with slightly smaller vetus. Vetus do a special sailing vessel trap for longer exhaust pipe runs - I suggest this.

I use one of those Vetus round waterlocks and I always start the engine first with the stop pressed to make sure, I did not get water into the engine. I have to replace this waterlock as soon as possible.

The installation has to be very deep below the engine. Check the inlet ! The inlet is at the bottom of the waterlock, not at the top as everybody else does it. With my engine (40 Hp Yanmar), I fill this waterlock up to 70% with water, when I switch off the engine. I have water 10 cm off the entrance to the engine. This waterlock has two stages and there is a lot of water insice during operation.
