Vetus: water lock only, or a water lock muffler?

I've previously mentioned that I find the noise of my VP 2003's exhaust to be almost unbearable at working rpm.
At the moment, it's rubber hose from the elbow to stern skin fitting.

Vetus do a water lock only (around £80), or a combined water lock muffler (around £180).

As a stingey sod, I wonder if anyone knows whether the price difference justifies the reduction in noise?

The combined unit also looks a possibly more awkward shape to fit.

We found a Vetus water lock sufficient on an MD11C after the original Elastomuffle failed

But we did not find it excessively noisy with just exhaust hose all the way during the period before the water lock was installed.

Apart from expense why not fit the waterlock. then if still too noisy fit a separate muffler ?

I agree, we had the Vetus water lock but no muffler on last boat and new boat is the same, both engines are Beta Marine 13.5hp and noise level is fine.

Waterlock will substantially reduce the noise as well as make the exhaust safer. Not really worth adding the muffler. Make sure you have a high loop just before the exit. Expect you have already seen the schematics in the Vetus catalogue so you can work out heights and placement of components.

And how to determine the correct size of waterlock IIRC

I have all three, Vetus muffler, waterlock and swan-neck. I fitted the muffler (waterlock and swan-neck already fitted) when I got the boat and found it did make a substantial difference to the noise level.

Just make sure the hose diameter is the same as the rest of the system.

The length of the hose is also a factor to be taken into consideration when determining the capacity of the water lock.

The formula in the vetus catalog for the capacity ( in litres) is 2 x π/4 x D² x L x 0.25 /1000
Where D and L are the diameter and length in cm
