The helm pump on my Colvic Northener is leaking fluid around the wheel shaft quite badly.
Have taken pump off for attention.
How easy is it to replace all seals in these units.
I do have a good understanding of mechanical things but am just concerned that by taken cap off of pump am going to be left with a pile of bits.
Are any specialised tools needed.
I know that sending it to be serviced officially is the best way but I am fed up with selling the big issue to keep financing boat projects!
Any constructive advice greatfully received.

Very simple - they use a quad ring, which is an O ring with an 'X' cross section. Measure the ID or shaft diameter to size it. I think there is a small cover held with a few screws, remove that then use a nappy pin to hook the old one out.

I did the one on my boat before last with the helm pump still in situ and if you are quick you will only loose a small amount of fluid.

The quad ring can be bought from a bearing stockist.
