Hello all

For my first of many questions to this forum I wonder if anyone can comment of this engine. It is in a 5 year old Dutch 50ft boat that I am interested in, it has done 1100 hours. It is a single engine that has had virtually exclusive fresh water use only. I intend to get it a little more salty.

My story is that I'm coming from catamaran sailing to motor boats and whilst I'm used to hearing about and researching Yanmars and Volvos, I don't know much about this engine's pedigree or problems/benefits.

If I should try and give more info please just say and thank you for any comments you may have.

Deutz are a well respected and established manufacturer and their engines are widely used
Volvo own I believe 25% and several Volvo penta engines are rebadged Deutz
Latestarter may well be the best source for detailed info

Deutz have a long history of being at the forefront of diesel technology, not up to date with how much of Deutz Volvo own these days since Volvo purchased Nissan Diesel in Japan, as they are using a lot of ND technology in their new engines including soon to be launched D8? marine motor.

However Deutz did design the Volvo Penta D4/6 engines and they have proved solid motors.

The DT-67622 is a rock solid base engine producing squat all power out of 7.2 liters.

My only reservation regarding the Vetus marinisation is the use of a dry exhaust manifold, every manufacturer without exception using dry manifolds has suffered cracking problems. This model has very low specific output so MAY just work.

My view on the D4/6 is yes I'd agree the short motor part is ok apart from a few major failures reported in early years to do with open injectors destroying a few motors .
However in recent times relating to my workload the bolt on items like heat exchangers, starters etc are abysmal in terms of longevity , something of which MUST be factored In when buying a used boat , these must be checked on sea trial and pre purchase inspection as would be owners will need to dig deep into there pockets soon after purchase.

Thanks for the bump Nick_H.

Can I test patience a little more.

Latestarter1, when you say that the engine 'is a rock solid base engine producing squat all power out of 7.2 litres.' What do you mean by 'squat all power'? The intended use after her spending a season back here in the UK will be river travel through France to the Med and on. Coming from a sailing boat I am used to and happy at slow speeds. Probable intention to sustain 7kts only in a boat that supposedly weighs in at 35 tons but I'm keen to try and understand the likely fuel efficiency. So does squat all power represent a good thing or bad?

Volvopaul, if your comment refers to the D4/6 engines then I guess I'm in the clear. Am I right about that?

Squat all.............Nothing, optimistic 231 Metric ISO 3046 rating anyway so barely 30 hp/ liter which is low specific low output therefore pointer to excellent durability and lack of C.A.C is good for reliability. In a displacement vessel you are never going to be running on full load curve either.

Not so good bit is dry exhaust manifold as well as simple industrial tin oil pan.

great engines, I am a builder, metal yachts, motorboats plus a qualified diesel fitter
I am searching for a used boat, 14, with a single vetus deutz 159shp, reasons for this, stroke longer than bore, 2500rpm max, happy at 800 t0 1000rpm 24 x 7, spares available, for builders they are good, the mts are high on the block so engine sits lower. Cummins I like very much too, the 6b,s, 6bt,s run 25000hrs plus in gensets
reason, I'm not building, ? 72 now and suffered a stroke

Lovely engine.
