Hi -Does anyone know how to remove the main shaft on a Vetus Alex 3 winch?
I have got down to the bronze spur gear but cannot work out what is retaining it on the shaft after removing the woodruff key.
Anyone got a drawing or advice please?

Oh - and the reason why is because the casing has corroded and one of the two studs holding the peg which kicks the chain off the gypsy is bent. Needs welding. If anyone has been here before - let me know!

thanks

Update -
The answer is perseverance! By pulling on the motor drive shaft if came out.
Theses winches are no longer available from Vetus though their UK office in Southampton have been helpful to telephone enquiries about lubrication. Use 4-500 grams of lithium based EP2 and pack it in. Apparently that should be done very couple of years because it will deteriorate especially if it gets and drenching (it's a winch. On the bow. So it will won't it?)

I have had the welding done and reassembled the winch which was straightforward though the casing needed a little heat to allow the drive shaft bearing to fit in.

Anyone need more drop me a PM
Alan
