I have discovered that it is possible to keep the iPad connected to my Raymarine E7D's LAN (so I can use excellent Raycontrol software on iPad) and connect to WAN via 3G at the same time (previously had to keep turning off wifi to use 3G).

On the iPad, just set the Wifi connection to a static IP eg 192.168.0.2 and the submask to 255.255.255.0 and leave the other settings blank. The iPad will then join the Raymarine LAN and 3G WAN at the same time which is very much more convenient.

I found this worked automatically. It started working after an iOS update about 2 or 3 years ago. If the iPad connects to a WiFi network that doesn't have working internet, it should, whilst remaining connected to the WiFi network, fallback onto 3G for internet access.
