I stay on my boat sometimes over the winter and I use my laptop there. Trouble is, I can't really read some work docs on a computer screen. So my question is, can anyone recommend a really small printer that I can keep on it? The smaller the better. Has to work with a Mac... but I've never found a printer that doesn't.

Citizen PN48 .... about size of a 200 cigarette block with battery etc. But uses inke cassette tape to print - difficuilt to find now.

Best we use on the job are the Canon BJ series ... best we reckon - BJC85 .... small, neat, sheet feeder, battery option, colour ...

But any of the BJ series from 30 model up - relatively cheap on Ebay ... cartridges are easy to refill ... later 50's and up models are IR capable as well.

I have been very happy with the Canon IP90 which is truly tiny and works very well with my Mac. It does need mains. The cartridges are inevitably quite small but can be refilled or you can get various substitutes off the net. For you, (going to and fro?) it might be useful that it comes in a very nifty and compact travelling box which you can both stow and carry it in!

Now we also have a bigger HP all-in-one. (This is why liveaboard boats go slowly ...) This is really useful for work related activities because of the photocopying and scanning capacity it has. It does take up more space but I don't know how we managed two businesses without it!

The older canon BJ printers can be picked up cheap on ebay and you can also swap out the print head on some for an optional scan head to also use it as a scanner. However beware that those pritners are a bit old now and the qulaity of the output is a little basic compared to what we get now which is ok for text but dont expect photo qulaity. That said one of them served us well on a tour around the med for the odd letter or weatherfax.

I have a Cannon BJC 240, that I no longer need. It always ran off a 240 Volt mains supply via a trnsformer/ rectifier down to 13.5 volt DC, so I would expect it to run on 12v battery. So if you are interested let me know.

Hp small printers are good - BUT - the cartridges are a nightmare .. we had HP portables .. and gave up with them - as cartidges were expensive, difficuilt to buy and could not be refilled. Canon BJ's on the other hand produced as good a print, were easily maintained and cartridges could be refilled easily. Running costs of Canon BJ's .... we have 5 out in the field and I reckon the 1 HP left accounts for similar running cost to all those Canons ... Oh and the sheet-feed on the HP's all died shortly after we got them .. ( only 1 left in use .. and that's on it's last legs ....)

The biggest problem we have now is the lack of portable printers on the market now as good as the old Canon's. Plus the price seems crazy for what is basically a desk machine crammed into a small box.m They now have chips in the cartridges ...
So I now buy Canon BJ's of Ebay ... If B&W and simple work .. BJ10 is fine (average about 5 to 10 quid), BJ30 gives sheetfeed as well (average about 20 quid), ...... if colour then BJ30C or later - must have C after the model number - expect prices to go up significantly for BJ85C's etc. - they are the real Bees Knees of portable printers ... excellent machines ..... pity that Canon stopped making them.

BJC85C, excellent wee printer! My power supply has been nicked, anybody got one? Or could find one? I would appreciate it.

Ebay ... is about only source I know that has reasonable price - except private ads of course.

Be careful as ONLY the BJ85C power supply will work with it - we lost one - inspector left it on a ship ..... none of the 30's, 10's, 50's power supplies would work it - even if we could connect ... it only works with the proper one.

Go on ebay and search Canon ... there are usually quite a few up on there ...
