Very sad

Just saw this in the news.

Seeing the power of the river at Sonning weir yesterday it must be absolutely terrifying to get caught in the current and know you can't escape it...

What a tragedy :-(

It does beg the question , what were 5 people , four of whom were children doing above a weir in a rowing boat when the river was in flood ?

Extremely sad , but so preventable.

Agreed I asked myself the same question yesterday, rowing boat out at Richmond making no progress whatsoever against the stream with four folk in, not sure if it was Richmond or Hammertons that hired it out but it was clearly a "no hire" day

I was thinking the same thing. Given the conditions it's not easy to think of a good reason why they were out on the river. No mention of lifejackets either.

Awful tragedy.

Hear that near similar occurence at Penton Hook weir yesterday morning involving 5 kayaks - youngsters and elders. All wearing lifejackets but got in trouble. Understand rescues and ambulance but no further detail.

I saw it as I was going through lock when it happened. School group it seems got caught in weir on kayaks. Can't understand what they were doing out to be honest - they certainly did not appear to be a white water trained group.

I walked down to Chertsey yesterday and saw an ominous paddle floating down the middle of the stream, and there appears to be a kayak wedged against one of the pylons upstream of the weir at PH
