Very rough figures please

Can anyone give me some very rough figures for some work on a boat that I am looking at later this week. I want to see if even with this work, the boat might be worth buying.

Its been out of the water for some time but seems to be in good condition, however I know it needs some work while out of the water.

1) Iron keels need to be stripped and repainted with whatever iron keels are painted with!
2) Needs Anti-fouling stripped and redone.
3) Needs cosmetic work on much of the woodwork.
4) Need to be moved to water and launched.

Its items 1,2 and 4 that I am looking for guesstimates on, for 4 it will probably mean moving 10-20 miles.

Its a 23 foot boat with bilge keels and has its original gel coat.

Almost certainly not worth paying somebody to do commercially. Hard graft, but materials relatively cheap - about £100-150 for paints. Best way is to have it blasted - about £300 and coat it yourself. Refurbishing wood is a how long is a piece of string - again labour intensive and depends on the level of finish you want.

Moving the boat will depend on access and lifting. Probably do it with a flatbed and a HIAB - but you will have to see what is available locally. Probably looking £3-500 for half day.

At this end of the market this sort of thing is DIY but if you don't want to do that, buy a boat that is up together and either in the water or just needs launching.

I'd say labour free do it yourself and the cost of primer and antifoul £100

2) Needs Anti-fouling stripped and redone.
again free labour and cost of antifoul same £100 so zero as you have it already

3) Needs cosmetic work on much of the woodwork.
again free labour tin of D1 D2 and brushes £40

4) Need to be moved to water and launched.
Lift in ranges from £75 to £250 if in a yard. Transport on low loader ? £800, lift off/in Hire of crane £400 for half day.

Thanks thats great, I should have said that I am happy to do the work DIY.

The costs of getting the boat back in the water may well kill this idea, I don't think I want to spend £1000 on that as its dead money rather than investment in the boat.

For transport a lorry with a HIAB may well be able to move a 23 ft bilge-keeler much cheaper than a normal boat transporter low-loader plus crane hire. Some yards however do not let HIABS load or unload boats.

As others have said if you cost yard labour it is going to be very expensive to do the jobs you list. Cheap enough for DIY.

Dont let me put you off, here's my experence...

I bourght a "cheap" wooden 25ft 18 months ago. Not a DIY expert by any means but not scared of manual work and have 4 teenage sons to press gang.

Boat was sailing condition, but previous owner had neglected a bunch of jobs. Nothing very major needed, but lots to do.

Have taken the view that experts do the expert jobs and we do the rest. Every job done is done properly so that it wont need to be redone for a long time (except annual stuff you would expect).

Boat cost £2750, 1st year spent another £6K and we did about 750 hours work. This year will be about the same (time / money). Expect year 3 to be similar. By that time we will done a complete refit. I then years 4 onwards to be less (estimate £2000 and 250 hours) until we get into refit in 10 years or so.

I see this as very much a long term investment. If nothing else, my knowledge of boats has increased dramatically. We wont ever get back what we spent, but hey, its my hobby.

PM me your email address if you would like a copy of the maintainence schedule I have worked up. It will give you some idea of what you are getting into with a wooden boat.

Would I have bourght an old wooden boat if I had known what was needed? Proabably not. Would I do it again? Not sure (and hopefully will not have to think about it for a long time but there is a very nice 1961 Nic 36 for sale in the yard). Am I enjoying a winter project and summer sailing YES, Yes and YES!
