Turned on fridge at mains switch (ie 240v) by the morning everything bar the gin was frozen. I assume that the stat inside fridge is for 12v use and that there is no stat for 240v as I looked everywere and could not find one, is 240 v just for getting the temp down and are you then supposed to use the battery which has the stat. If this is the case is it ok to leave the fridge running on Battery indefinetely.

Also Boat has two batterys, position is currently on both. Why, What, Were ? please explain.

Regards Ian

Ps. Boat in question is Bayliner 2655 circa 1999

I would have thought the thermostat would work on any power, its a compressor fridge? then the thermostat controls the compressor, not the power source. something wrong here I suspect, the temp control in the fridge set low? The fridge need defrosting? Something amiss!!

I reckon your thermostat's bust. In which case you need a new one. Only it's from the US. So you won't be able to get one. So that's a new fridge, sir, the marine version at £££££squillions. Ker-ching!

Only kidding! I hope. But like CCScott, I reckon the 'stat's bust.

Your batteries are presumably one for domestics and one for starting oop engine. Domestic battery will stand constant low level drainage, whilst engine battery will excel at short sharp interludes of high drainage, like when you crank the engine - or so the story goes. The idea being that, even if your fridge drains the "domestic" battery flat, you'll be able to get the engine started with the other battery and recharge everything. The switch controls what's on and what's charging, I think.

I'm a bit vague on this, 'cos I've only got one battery for both functions. This is OK until you run it flat (say, purely hypothetically, because you've left something on) and can't get started. This usually happens, in my experience, when you've got SWMBO and the kids out of bed at the crack of dawn to go down to the boat.

(

Re batteries.
I suspect that you have a very simple system (the best, as long as you remember what to do). So with both batteries on you have charge going to both (as long as it's charging) but also if your moored up in a bay running your fridge and other things it's draining both batteries and when it comes to starting up you may not have enough juice (I've done it with previous boats and they don't bump start very well) so you just have to remember to switch over to one when your just using power and remember to switch both on again when you're in charge mode.
Does it make sence?

It seems exactly the same system as I have on my Windy 8800. You can select batteries 1 or 2 or All or Off.

Makes sense to always leave one fully charged to boot the motors up with!

Hi David

If you have for instance battery 1 selected is battery 2 still being charged by the shore power and or the alternator ?

When the 240v shorepower is connected, and the fridge switch on the masterboard is set to ON, then the 240v will operate. The fridge only switches to battery power when there is no 240v detected. The fridge will drain the battery power pretty quickly (overnight) so ensure that when you are out on the water without the engine running, particuarly if you anchor overnight, that you set the battery switch to the setting for the domestic battery (which is probably the one with the higher Ah rating) and turn the fridge down. If your fridge, lights, radio and other 12V devices drain this battery then just flick the switch across to the other battery.

When charging and motoring leave the switch setting on BOTH and both batteries should get a charge.

In a earlier thread on this (started by me) someone mentioned that you must never put the switch to OFF when the engine is running or the charger on as it can damage the alternator/charger
