Bought one of these digital optical tachos not expecting too much, but it worked well checking rpm of my 4108. It takes about 2 secs to give a stable reading. (the 30year old Perkins tacho was 20rpm out at idle and 50rpm at 2500)

Comes with reflective adhesive strips and just needed about 2cms stuck on the crank pulley and the tacho held about 10cms from it.

I advise removing the battery when not is use because the soft case does not stop the buttons being pressed in by something lying on top of it and flattening the battery...

Will the Tiny Tach work on diesel engines - ie ones without spark plugs? The Ebay listing quoted above seems to suggest 2/4 stroke petrol.

Maybe there are other versions?

Tiny Tach Diesel

Yes, there is a version for diesel and its mega-simple to install, the sensor is simply attached to the outside of one of the diesel injection pipes.

Will a diesel type "Tiny Tach" work on older engines too? Mine is an old 1.5 BMC chug along.

Almost ceratinly. They work on any diesel engine with injector lines. I guess they may not work on modern common rail systems.

You have to get the correct transducer for the size of injector pipes you have.

Interesting, is there any way that the laser optical head can be seperated from the main body, mounted permanently near to the engine flywheel and a cable run to the body of the unit?
That way the display can be mounted near to the helm and the sensor on the engine, making it a permanant solution to not having a rev counter on my Yanmar 1GM10
